The Art of Mark-Making

Editorial Design, Installation
2023

When walking around a city, one can encounter various forms of marks, such as graffiti, tags, doodles, stickers, or notes, that seem to ask for attention. Altogether, they form an interesting visual culture around the city, bringing spaces to life. What does leaving marks in forgotten spaces mean, and what impact can it have?

The Art of Mark-Making is a book and installation that seeks to explore the concept of mark-making, specifically in forgotten spaces, through a collection of interviews and articles. It delves into the psychology behind leaving marks and their impact on spaces and the community. The project argues that mark-making is a form of expression that has the potential to transform forgotten spaces into vibrant, livable areas that foster a sense of community and belonging.

By leaving marks in forgotten spaces, this project aims to bring attention to their visibility in public spaces. Through the lens of visual culture, these seemingly insignificant areas are transformed from “nowhere” into “somewhere”, inspiring readers to consider the power of leaving their own unique marks and seeing forgotten spaces in a new light.
